Heads up — these docs cover Voice Monkey API v3, the current version. If you signed up before the v3 launch, your account is still on API v2 for a limited transition period and the examples below will not work against your account.

AI assistants (MCP)

Voice Monkey has an MCP server, so AI assistants that support MCP connectors can use your Voice Monkey account. Once it’s connected you can ask things like “tell the kitchen Echo dinner’s ready” or “run my goodnight flow” and the assistant does it for you.

You connect once by signing in with Amazon and approving access. There’s no API token to copy.

The server URL is:

https://mcp.voicemonkey.io/mcp

Works in Claude on the web, in the desktop app and in Cowork.

  1. Open Customize → Connectors.
  2. Click +, then Add custom connector.
  3. Enter Voice Monkey as the name and https://mcp.voicemonkey.io/mcp as the URL. Leave the advanced settings empty.
  4. Click Add, then Connect, and sign in to Voice Monkey when the window opens.

To use it in a chat, click + in the message box, choose Connectors and check Voice Monkey is switched on.

The assistant opens a Voice Monkey page. Sign in with Amazon if you aren’t already, check it’s the right account, then click Authorize. You’re sent back to the assistant and Voice Monkey’s tools become available.

Each assistant gets its own connection. You’ll find it under Integrations → AI Assistants in the console, not on your API tokens page.

  • “What Voice Monkey devices do I have?”
  • “Tell the kitchen Echo that dinner’s ready.”
  • “Show ‘SCHOOL RUN IN 10 MINUTES’ in red on the hallway Echo Show.”
  • “Run my goodnight flow.”
  • “Trigger the porch lights routine.”
  • “Show my kitchen noticeboard screen and set the message to ‘Back at 6’.”
  • “Set the variable MILK_NEEDED to yes.”

The assistant matches the names you use to the names of your devices, Flows and Screens, so clear names like “Kitchen” or “Goodnight” work best.

Tool What it does
announce Speak text on a Speaker, with an optional voice and language.
play_audio Play a hosted audio file (mp3, m4a) on a Speaker.
display_image Show an image on an Echo Show or Echo Spot.
display_video Play a video on an Echo Show, optionally on a loop.
display_text Show full-screen text, with optional colours and size.
display_website Open a web page on an Echo Show.
show_screen Show one of your Screens, optionally speaking and setting variables first.
trigger Fire a Routine Trigger device so its Alexa Routine runs.
run_flow Run one of your Flows.
list_devices, list_flows, list_screens Look up your devices, Flows and Screens.
list_variables, get_variable, set_variable Read and update your variables.
create_reminder, list_reminders, delete_reminder Set, list and cancel reminders, e.g. “remind the kids at 8:15 to put their shoes on”.

Anything that makes an Echo speak, play, show something or run a Routine or Flow uses your plan’s monthly request allowance, the same as an API call. Looking up devices, Flows and Screens, and reading or setting variables, doesn’t.

One question can lead to several actions, so assistants can use requests faster than a single automation. You can see what’s been used on the Usage page in the console, and the allowance for each plan on the pricing page. If the allowance runs out, the assistant tells you when it resets.

  • The assistant can only use the tools above, and only on your account. It can’t see your Amazon account, your billing or anyone else’s data.
  • It can read the names of your devices, Flows and Screens, and the values of your variables. Don’t keep passwords or API keys in variables.
  • Most assistants ask before they use a tool. You can change this in the assistant’s own settings.

In the console, open Integrations → AI Assistants and click Disconnect next to the assistant. It stops working with your account within a minute. If you’ve connected the same assistant more than once, they’re all disconnected together.

Also remove Voice Monkey from the assistant’s own connector settings so it stops asking you to sign in again: Customize → Connectors in Claude, Plugins in ChatGPT, or delete the entry from mcp.json in Cursor. Deleting your Voice Monkey account removes every connection.

Problem What to do
“Couldn’t reach the MCP server” or the connection fails Check the URL is exactly https://mcp.voicemonkey.io/mcp, with no trailing slash. Remove the connector and add it again.
The sign-in page sends you to a page about Voice Monkey v2 AI assistants need a v3 account. See Migrating from v2.
The assistant can’t find a device Ask it to list your devices, then use the exact name.
It says the monthly request allowance is used up Wait for the reset date it gives you, or upgrade your plan.
It says the safety throttle is active Too many requests were sent in a short time. Wait a few minutes and try again.
Cursor doesn’t finish signing in Allow the browser to open Cursor after you click Authorize. If nothing happens, click Connect again in Tools & MCP.
The tools don’t appear Start a new chat. In Claude, check Voice Monkey is switched on under + → Connectors.
